Where Does a Fall Evening on Jacksonville's Riverfront Actually Work?

On August 12, the fireboat Robert F. Kiely shot fountains of river water into the air, and Met Park Marina was open. Jacksonville Today reported that within hours, eight of its 78 slips were in use and river taxis were tied up nearby. Thirteen days later, a restaurant opened at the same marina.

These openings show a pattern along the river this year. Downtown now has real places to spend an evening on the Northbank and the Southbank. The walking links between those places are what crews are still building. This fall, the riverfront works best when you treat each pocket as its own outing.

The East End Now Has a Reason to Stay After Dark

The marina sits off Gator Bowl Boulevard. It replaces an older city dock and adds water and electric hookups, marine fuel and a store. The renovated stretch of Northbank Riverwalk next to it reopened the same day.

The restaurant is Asado Life, a live-fire grill serving grilled meats, seafood and shareable plates. Downtown Jacksonville's district organization notes it has been featured in the Florida Michelin Guide. It has a covered patio, indoor seating, a double-sided bar and a long wine list. You can arrive by boat through the marina or by car, and either way you look out at the skyline and the stadium. It's open Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays.

Asado Life opened just as the eastern riverfront turned into a construction zone. Four Seasons is building its hotel next door. EverBank Stadium is under renovation across the street, and a marine fire station is going up nearby. Asado Life runs out of the marina's support building, which is part of the larger Jacksonville Shipyards project. That project's plans also call for 170 hotel rooms, 26 residences and five public-facing restaurants. The hotel itself is listed as opening in 2027.

So for now, this end of downtown has one dining room with one marina, set inside an active job site.

Game Days Add a Second Layer of Fencing

That job site matters most on a Jaguars Sunday. The team's own FAQ lists EverBank Stadium's 2026 capacity at 42,465, with the 400 Level and other areas offline. The plaza level no longer lets you walk all the way around from gate to gate. The ramps at Gates 2 and 3 lead to the main concourse, and the recommended entry gates may change during the season.

The stadium's Know Before You Go page says lots open four hours before kickoff and suggests getting to your lot at least three hours early. It also warns that some walking routes will be affected and construction may cause delays. The team's FAQ adds that parking supply and traffic should look about like 2025, with the caveat that construction affects some lots.

This fall is also the last chance at this stadium for a while. The Jaguars will play the 2027 season at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, and the renovated stadium's grand opening is targeted for August 2028. Florida–Georgia has already moved for 2026 and will be played at a neutral site in Atlanta.

The Middle Is Where Downtown Gathers

Head west from the marina and the anchor is Riverfront Plaza, built on the old Jacksonville Landing site. Its first phase soft-opened on November 29, 2025, with a playground, an event lawn and better connections to the Riverwalk. The Riverfront Music Garden, on the waterfront by the Performing Arts Center, opened on May 13, 2026. The city says the accessible Riverwalk route now runs without a break from Riverside Arts Market to the Hyatt.

The city confirms the continuous run only as far as the Hyatt. At the east end, the renovated stretch next to the marina reopened on August 12. The city's project page also lists a separate Four Seasons Hotel Corridor Riverwalk segment, with a substantial-completion target of August 30, 2026. That is a target date, and downtown's investment site still lists the Northbank Riverwalk as under construction. None of these sources confirms an unbroken riverside walk all the way from Riverfront Plaza to the marina this fall.

Food in the plaza is also still on the way. First Coast News reported that European Street Cafe plans to open in the Riverfront Plaza pavilion, with an opening expected by late fall 2026. The Jacksonville Daily Record noted on September 17 that the cafe was waiting on a Downtown Investment Authority vote on a forgivable loan.

The Bridge Walk Is the Connector Under Construction

The clearest example of the connectors coming last is the Main Street Bridge. Work began on August 24, 2026, to remove what the city calls the bridge "nub." The city describes it as "the first step in creating a permanent pedestrian connection from the Main Street Bridge to the new Riverfront Plaza."

Here's what that means between now and winter, according to the city's I Dig Jax project page:

  • Southbound traffic toward Riverplace Boulevard is down to one lane
  • The pedestrian walkway on the southbound side is closed, with posted sidewalk detours
  • Northbound traffic keeps two lanes
  • The Haskell Company is the contractor
  • Anticipated completion is January 30, 2027

The city tells anyone crossing between the Northbank and Southbank to expect delays and plan alternate routes. The permanent connection itself belongs to Riverfront Plaza's second phase, which also adds a beer garden and a rain garden. Jacksonville Today reported a target of the end of 2027. The city's own page gives a more cautious December 2027 or January 2028.

The Southbank Runs on Its Own Calendar

Across the river, the RiversEdge parks opened on November 24, 2025, with walkways, a yoga lawn and a playground. The Southbank Riverwalk's eastern extension opened to the public the same day. With the bridge walkway closed, the Southbank programming this fall works best as a separate evening:

Event Dates Time Where
Third Thursday Sip & Stroll Oct. 15, Nov. 19, Dec. 17 5–8 p.m. Southbank Riverwalk, 1701 Prudential Drive to RiversEdge
North and Southbank Educational Plant Walks Oct. 17, Nov. 21 10–11 a.m. Meet at RiversEdge, 2010 Prudential Drive

For a drink nearby, the Florida Times-Union's September openings roundup lists The Huguenot, a wine, cheese and charcuterie bar at 1039 Hendricks Ave. The Jacksonville Business Journal reports that Merchant's Cafe has opened inside the Marriott Southbank Hotel.

November 28 Puts Everything on One Night

Holiday River Fest, presented by Bank of America, brings the whole riverfront together on Saturday, November 28, 2026. Here's the city's schedule:

  1. 5:00 p.m. Holiday River Fest begins
  2. 6:25 p.m. Christmas tree lighting at Riverfront Plaza
  3. 6:30 p.m. Jacksonville Light Boat Parade begins on the St. Johns
  4. 8:15 p.m. Parade winners announced on the Holiday Stage at Riverfront Plaza
  5. About 8:30 p.m. After-parade fireworks

This is the second year the city's Christmas tree has stood at Riverfront Plaza. The city's event page promises hot cocoa, food trucks and family activities across the plaza, and Mayor Donna Deegan will lead the lighting. The parade travels along both the Northbank and Southbank, and spectators can watch from the downtown Riverwalks. The finale includes the signature waterfall fireworks pouring off the Main Street and Acosta bridges. If you're near the Main Street Bridge, its southbound walkway will still be closed under the construction schedule. Pick your bank before the boats start, because crossing mid-show will be harder than in past years.

If you'd rather be in the parade, free boat registration for the judged competition closes Monday, November 16, at 11:59 p.m. Categories cover vessels under 30 feet, vessels 30 feet and over, sailboats, and corporate entries. A 78-slip marina just upriver from the plaza is new this year.

New Year's Eve fireworks over the river are promoted by Visit Jacksonville for midnight on December 31, with viewing from both banks. The city hasn't posted 2026 logistics yet.

What Stays Fenced, and Until When

Project Latest status Expected
Main Street Bridge southbound walkway Closed for nub removal Jan. 30, 2027
Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Under construction 2027
Riverfront Plaza phase 2 Under construction Dec. 2027 or Jan. 2028
Shipyards West park and 36,000-square-foot pavilion Permit under review as of July 2026 End of 2028 target
Museum of Science & History, new Northbank building 60% schematics; groundbreaking expected early 2027 Riverwalk at site around Jan. 30, 2029

Jacksonville Today reported that the new MOSH is planned as a five-story, 125,000-square-foot museum with ten exhibits and a cafe. The museum has to show enough funding for initial development by early 2027. The Daily Record put Phase A of Shipyards West, with its galleries, event rooms, food service, lawn and gardens, at $57 million. The first fence on this list should come down around January 30, 2027, when the bridge walkway is due to reopen.
